"The creation of the Citrus Commodity Commission is a huge win for citrus growers across Georgia and our burgeoning citrus industry. We now have a dedicated body focused on the research, education, and promotion of Georgia Grown citrus" said Commissioner Tyler Harper. "I am proud to have worked alongside the General Assembly on legislation to establish the Citrus Commodity Commission this past legislative session to ensure that Georgia citrus growers have the resources and support they need to continue producing the highest quality, Georgia Grown citrus for consumers here at home and across the country."
Legislation to create the Georgia Citrus Commission was passed by the Georgia General Assembly during the 2023 session at the request of the Georgia Citrus growers. The bill (HB 545) was signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp on Tuesday, April 18.
The Commission was created to support Georgia's growing citrus industry by providing financial support from assessments on product marketed for research, education, and promotion of Georgia citrus. The University of Georgia has committed to hiring dedicated citrus specialists to work on breeding varieties, horticultural, and production issues.
